Steiacherhof apartments for the elderly, Spreitenbach

Steiacherhof, Spreitenbach, Fischer Architekten AG Zürich

Steiacherhof residential development offers elderly people in the third phase of their lives a modern and contemporary home with services that can be availed of individually. Through its position, length, and height the L-shaped building screens the residential district from the busy road. A quiet residential courtyard and clear street spaces are created.

The settlement area between Zurich and Baden extends across a wide plain between the Heitersberg and the banks of the River Limmat. In the south is the old village core of Spreitenbach, which has preserved its original character to a considerable extent. The modern Spreitenbach lies to the north and consists of extensive areas of housing blocks, commercial zones and shops.

The Steiacherhof housing development was built in the immediate proximity of “Tivoli” shopping centre. It offers apartments for the elderly, rooms for a hairstylist, social work and the Spitex organisation, as well as a restaurant open to the public. The L-shaped volume screens the green courtyard side of the building from the two busy streets and opens towards the residential district beyond. Six staircases structure the building and provide access to the apartments that face onto the courtyard.

A continuous connecting corridor at ground floor level enables residents from each of the apartments to reach the public rooms. The street facades, which are clearly closed in character, contrast with the storey-high windows on the side facing the garden.
