Apartment houses on Speerstrasse, Zurich Wollishofen

Wohnhäuser Speerstrasse, Zürich Wollishofen | Fischer Architekten AG

In 1932, only three years after opening his own architecture office, Wilhelm Fischer completed his first big commission in Zurich Wollishofen. Despite its rather conservative appearance, the development on Speerstrasse, which consists of four apartment buildings and still exists today, indicates Fischer’s interest in new forms.

Excerpt from the yearbook 2009 (Roman Hollenstein):

“Compared to his earlier SIM building, at first glance Wilhelm Fischer’s first big commission the housing development completed in 1932 on Speerstrasse in Zurich Wolllishofen, looks like a step backwards in formal terms. With the neo-Baroque hipped mansard roofs Wilhelm Fischer gave the apartment houses a dignified, conservative bourgeois character, but the windows of different sizes, the balconies and loggias indicate his interest in new forms.”
